SUFC McCall distances himself from blades job

Former Sheffield United player and coach Stuart McCall says he is happy at Motherwell after being linked with the vacant manager`s position at Bramall Lane.

United are looking for a new manager after sacking Danny Wilson recently despite the side being in fifth place in League One.

McCall spent five years at Bramall Lane as a player and a coach. He made 90 appearances during three seasons in the side in the twilight of his career and he helped the side reach the play-off final as well as the semi-finals of both the FA and League Cup.

He led the reserve team to the league title during his time at Bramall Lane and he was assistant to manager Neil Warnock as the side won promotion to the Premier League in 2006.

McCall feels that people are linking him with the vacant position because of his links previously with the club.

Speaking on ESPN, McCall said, 'I think it only comes from the fact I had five great years at Sheffield United.

'It's a smashing club but I'm certainly enjoying my time at Motherwell.

'They are in the play-offs and they have got a great chance of getting up and hopefully they do.'


McCall recently signed a new two-year deal at Motherwell and they need just one point from their last two games to guarantee a second placed finish.

Since leaving United in the summer of 2007 following their relegation from the Premier League he has had spells with Bradford City and Motherwell as manager.

He joined Bradford City before the start of the next season and he spent just over three years with the League Two side before he was dismissed in February after a poor start to the season in 2009/10.

McCall took over at Motherwell at the start of 2011 and he led them to the semi-finals of both the FA and League Cup. After losing in the semi-final of the League Cup, he went one better in the FA Cup before losing the final 3-0 to Celtic.

Motherwell finished the season in sixth place, the same as when he had taken over.

In his first full season at Motherwell, he led them to a third placed finish. This season they played in both the Champions League and Europa League qualifiers, losing out to Panathinaikos and Levante in their first qualifying rounds.

McCall is currently the second favourite for the job with SkyBet at 5/1 with Gillingham manager Martin Allen the 2/1 favourite having just led them to the League Two title.
