SUFC Weir - I cannot wait to get started

New Sheffield United manager David Weir says he cannot wait to get started at such a fantastic club.

Weir was named the new manager today after a lengthy search for a successor to Danny Wilson, who was dismissed in April.

It is the 43-year-olds first senior management role, having previously worked with the Everton development squad since his retirement from playing in 2011 and he cannot wait to get started. Speaking on the official website , Weir said, 'My first thoughts about the job are of excitement, I understand how privileged I am to be named manager of a fantastic football club like Sheffield United.

'I honestly can't wait to get started and get a real feel for the club, then obviously I am eager to get organised for when the players return for pre-season training later this month.'

Weir will bring a wealth of experience to Bramall Lane having made over 800 senior appearances both at club level and internationally.

He spent 20-years in the game as a player and he is sixth in the list of all-time appearances for Scotland having played for his country 69 times.

When he finished playing, he returned to one of his former clubs Everton, where he took up a role coaching the academy and reserve teams.

Weir was recently interviewed for the vacant manager`s position at Everton following David Moyes decision to take over at Manchester United but he missed out to Roberto Martinez.

Chris Morgan, who took caretaker charge of United following the dismissal of Wilson, will now return to his coaching role at the club having missed out on the job on a permanent basis.
