SUFC Long watches England throw away lead

SUFC Long watches England throw away lead

Sheffield United goalkeeper George Long watched on from the bench as England threw away a two-goal lead in their opening under-20 World Cup group game against Iraq.

Young Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone got the nod in goal ahead of both Long and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Connor Ripley.

Peter Taylor`s side looked to be cruising to an opening game victory after goals from Liverpool`s Conor Coady and Middlesbrough`s Luke Williams either side of half time.

Ali Faez pulled a goal back for Iraq from the penalty spot halfway through the second half and an injury time goal from Ali Adnan clinched a surprise point for Iraq.

England must now prepare for their next game against fancied Chile on Wednesday 26th (4pm BST) before finishing off their group games with a game against Egypt on Saturday 29th (7pm BST).

Chile beat Egypt 2-1 earlier in the day to lead the group.

The top two automatically qualify for the last sixteen whilst the four best-placed third placed teams from the six groups will also go through.

Vital Sheffield United will keep you up to date with how England and Long do throughout the competition.

I watched the game. They thought they had it won easily at 2-0 and it could come back to haunt them.
