SUFC Clough ready for a ram-raid in January

Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough says he could return to his former club Derby County in the January transfer window as he looks to strengthen his blades squad.

Clough, who spent four-and-a-half years at Derby before his dismissal in December is being strongly linked with a move for rams striker Johnny Russell, who arrived at Pride Park from Scottish Premier League side Dundee United during the summer but the blades boss says they have a number of players who could add something to the blades squad.

Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Clough said, "We have a few decisions to make on players and we need to see what business we can do with players going out to make room for players coming in.

"There are five or six players that we left behind at Derby that are good characters and we know their abilities.

"There are a few there that will improve us but it doesn`t matter where they come from as long as they improve us on the pitch."

Russell cost Derby 750,000 when he arrived at Pride Park in the summer after scoring 42 goals in 120 appearances during his time at Dundee United.
The 23-year-old has struggled since his arrival south of the border, netting 5 times in 17 appearances and Clough admits he will be looking to add a striker when the window opens in just under two week`s time. "I think we could do with a midfield player and a striker," added Clough.

Clough will want more from his strikers in the second half of the season. Despite their recent form, they have failed to score more than one goal in their last five League One games and central defender Harry Maguire remains their leading goalscorer with five goals this season.
