Brilliant end to 2013 at BDTBL!

Well, yesterday`s performance was a totally different display compared to the Oldham game.

The festive turkey must have worked its way through! The team came out of the blocks and straight into an attacking frame of mind. There were a lot of great chances, shots on target, and goals to boot.

There were a couple of changes from the Oldham team, with Murphy starting, probably because Aidy White is injured, and Miller omitted from the starting team. This I later found out via Radio Sheffield, was due to him taking a knock previously, and the management team not wanting to strain his fitness, or have a repeat of last season.

Murphy`s goal was good, after a little bit of a scramble, he had the forethought to knock the ball into the net. The next two goals were pure class. Porter`s cross found Baxter who knocked the ball in, and Flynn`s goal was a good reward after he had been battling so well on the wing. The team hit the bar and had a couple of attempts cleared off the Tranmere line, and you could tell that the team were trying to smother Tranmere with good passing play and lots of attacking football.

I only have two criticisms this week. One goes to the referee, another under par performance from him. A lot of fouls that we had committed earned play being stopped and a card or two shown, however, with similar tackles that the Tranmere players made, they seemed to be let off lightly with no punishment dished out. There as a lot of shirt pulling and pushes by their team, this went unnoticed by the officials. To get goals and all the points from these conditions were just rewards and a show of strength from the team.

The other criticism I have, is against George Long again. A few guys on the Kop were saying that he probably needs a rest. He did a lot of "dawdling" on the ball at times, trying to show off a bit. This could have cost us, when all he needs to do is punt it back up field. He nearly gifted a goal in the first half, when he wasn`t commanding enough in his area and ended up leaving his net wide open - luckily Maguire got back and cleared off the line.

All in all though, it was a good performance from the team, was nice to see Coady have a run out, even though his future is undecided as yet. He has progressed really well and you can tell he wants to stay with the commitment in his play.

Well, that`s us moving in the right direction now, moving up the table. We will have to look forward to the next away fixture at Walsall, which will be my last match before I go back to sea in January. Let`s hope for another three points and more movement up towards the top half of League One.
I`m looking forward to the transfer period as well - hopefully we may pull some good players into the squad, hopefully another striker which would be a good move.

As always, UTB!

I still wouldn't write off a play-off push. Always one team comes from nowhere in the second half of the season.
