Clough admits he took a gamble against Stevenage

Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough admitted he took a gamble as they grinded out a 1-0 win against Stevenage at Bramall Lane.

Clough stuck with the side that started the FA Cup semi-final last weekend and he admitted it was a gamble.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Clough said, "The three points were the most important thing and we showed the effects of last weekend.

"I took a gamble playing the same side but we managed to grind out a result."


United won 1-0 thanks to a tenth minute own goal from John Mousinho who diverted a Jamie Murphy cross into his own goal.

With bottom of the table Stevenage fighting for their life in League One, they threw caution to the wind in the second half and Mark Howard did well to deny Luke Freeman an equaliser.

The win for United kept alive their slim hopes of reaching the play-off places and they were helped with sixth place Peterborough United losing at Bradford City.

United now prepare for a trip to Tranmere Rovers on Monday, another team fighting for League One survival.
