Clough On Doncaster Victory

Clough On Doncaster Victory

Manager Nigel Clough has hailed the 'guts and determination' the Sheffield United side showed in our three two victory over Doncaster on Tuesday evening.

In the five goal thriller on home soil, United had to battle to come from behind before then twice taking the lead to see out the victory in a very hard fought contest.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, a proud and happy manager explained.

'We were probably slightly fortunate to come away with all three points, because the game was so open it could have gone either way and the scoreline could have been anything. But the two goals Doncaster scored were incredible strikes, as was our winner goal courtesy of Steven Davies. It was a stark contrast to Saturday though, we played very well at times again, but especially in the second-half it was all about guts and determination and these lads fight so hard for each other in those situations.'

Clough went on to say that we have long been creating chances, especially Done and Davies, and he knows if we keep doing that they will score and put them away so the trick is in trying to keep the side balanced and get both of them in the line up along with the other threats that we carry.

It's something he's still working on.

'The dilemma we have is accommodating them both in the team. Matty didn't quite look right on the left, so we tried Steven there and he end up getting an assist for the second goal.'

With penalty decisions figuring in the game, the gaffer also admitted that maybe we had a let off on the handball decision that went for us but there was no denying that Doncaster pushed us all the way and that the game could've gone for them as it did for us.

'Our penalty was an easy decision for the referee, the defender probably hasn't seen Matty and he has just clipped his trailing leg. For their shout late on it could have been, it wasn't deliberate by John Brayford but he has jumped up with his arms raised and sometimes they are given sometimes they aren't. It was a real open game, Doncaster have the second best away record in the league for a reason, they produced a very good performance and we had to dig in deep to wrestle to initiative back at times and get all three points.'
