Long's Wimbledon Loan - Defender Bids Turned Down

Long's Wimbledon Loan - Defender Bids Turned Down

Sheffield United goalkeeper George Long, stranded on 123 appearances and not featuring since November, will spend the upcoming season on loan at League One side AFC Wimbledon.

United announced a season-long deal on Tuesday, Chris Wilder deciding a spell away from Bramall Lane will be in the best interests of all concerned as Long, 23, looks to get the first team football he couldn't offer him.

Wilder told the Official Website: 'George's attitude last season was first-class, but we understand his need to play first-team football. He goes to an excellent club with an excellent manager, hopefully this loan will prove to be beneficial to all parties and George returns an even better goalkeeper.'

Long was limited to a handful of first team appearances last season and found himself behind Wilder's number one, Simon Moore.

Meanwhile, United's bid to bring in further players this summer has seen two bids for Blackburn defender Darragh Lenihan turned down, according to Sky Sports.

It is claimed an offer of £400,000 was increased to £500,000 plus add-ons but Blackburn want to keep the defender, who apparently wants to remain in the Championship, so have turned down these offers.

Wilder, who could also look to bring in free agent Mike Williamson following his release by Wolves, retains an interest in Lenihan, 23, and is 'expected to make another offer.'
