Reactions - Sheffield United v Aston Villa (30/1/18)

Following yesterday's clash between Sheffield United and Aston Villa, here are the instant reactions from both managers.

Sheffield United hosted Aston Villa at Bramall Lane for a 7.45pm kick off on Tuesday January 30, with the visitors taking a narrow one nil victory.

A Robert Snodgrass effort in the 90th minute decided the points on the day between the two Play Off hopefuls but Villa will be thankful for Sam Johnstone's efforts across the game as United more than edged it in the opening 45 minutes.

Villa do now make it five wins on the spin and they are within a point of second placed Derby County.

Teams:

Sheff Utd:

Moore, Basham, Stearman, O'Connell, Baldock, Leonard (Lundstram 67), Evans (Holmes 74), Fleck, Stevens, Clarke, Wilson (Donaldson 67).

Substitutes:

Sharp, Duffy, Lafferty, Eastwood.

Aston Villa:

Johnstone, Elmohamady, Chester, Terry, Hutton, Bjarnason, Snodgrass, Hourihane (Onomah 76), Grealish, Adomah (Jedinak 86), Hogan (Davis 82).

Substitutes:

Taylor, Whelan, Tuanzebe, Bunn.

Speaking to the BBC's cameras a short time after match day referee Jeremy Simpson blew the final whistle, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder explained.

'It's bittersweet really. We've gone toe-to-toe with Championship sides who shouldn't really be in the Championship. The goalkeeper made some fantastic saves and the finish at the end comes from a player who has played in the Premier League and at international level. But we're talking top-end Championship football and whilst we've not had the luck that we've needed to win a tight game I can't be too critical.'

Aston Villa assistant manager Colin Calderwood in his comparative interview explained.

'It wasn't as we'd have wanted, especially in the first half and when it's not perfect, you've got to get through it. We found ourselves on the back foot but we dug in and got through that period and it was an excellent result. We've dug in and got three points away from home out of nothing spectacular. Our goalkeeper played really well, made some good saves and with Snodgrass it wasn't a chance - it was the quality that wins the game.'

villa on a bit of a role and coming away from bramall lane with 3 points was something i really did not think would happen,,, but we have been nicking 1 nils away from home , and before the match i said i would have taken a draw,,, united really are such an impressive side and as my pal is a blade ive watched them a few times this season and what wilder has achieved is nothing short of a miracle,,, last night we hardly had a sniff although we did get into some good situations the blades defended and closed us down so well,,,, and although you lost dont be too down as i think you have every chance of going up through the play offs and for me i would really like to see you back in the premiership,,, up the blades,,,,,

As a Villan, I thought the Blades were clearly the better side for long periods but just couldn't get past Johnstone. Really impressed with the work rate and skill. On another night we could have lost 2 or 3 nil. Great performance from your lot - good luck for the rest of the season - unless we meet in the play offs!
